Permanent Capital
Maia invests family-backed permanent capital. We have no fund lifecycle, no external investor constraints, and no artificial exit timeline. This allows us to take a genuinely long-term view on value creation. We do not acquire businesses to prepare them for resale within three to five years. We invest in businesses to build them indefinitely — compounding value over decades rather than chasing short-term returns.
Ongoing Investment
We actively seek opportunities to provide additional capital to partner businesses to support growth over time. This can include investment in people, infrastructure, systems, roll-outs, acquisitions or capital assets. We are not capital constrained or limited in our capacity or desire to continue to provide additional capital to partner businesses over the long-term – a clear difference to traditional private equity who are often structurally challenged in providing ongoing support to portfolio businesses, particularly later in an investment cycle.
Operational Partnership
Partnership with management is fundamental to our approach. We provide hands-on operational support to every partner business. This means working alongside management teams on strategic planning, talent acquisition, systems implementation, financial management, operational improvement, roll-outs and acquisitions. Our team brings direct experience of building and scaling some of the UK's most successful businesses, and we deploy our experience, empathy and networks in service of our partners, without getting in management's way in running the business day-to-day.
Low Leverage
Given our long-term horizon, we purposely limit the use of external debt in partner businesses so that leaders can focus on growth, have the flexibility to endure short-term challenges and capitalise on opportunities without the worry of managing their balance sheet and debt obligations. Our value creation is driven by exceptional business building, not through use of financial leverage.
Alignment
We look for founders or operators seeking a long-term capital partner to help build an exceptional business, rather than a short-term financial exit – alignment of vision, values and incentives is fundamental to our partnerships. We are comfortable in minority or majority ownership positions, alongside management. We want leadership teams in our partner businesses to be well rewarded for long-term success, and can be creative in designing appropriate mechanisms to deliver liquidity through the life of our partnership, whilst enabling us all to retain the upside of value growth compounding over time.
